Back when I wrote for the LA Weekly, I was queen of the Best of issues. I always loved the opportunity to give some a boost to my favorite shops and restaurants and service providers. Plus, it was fun to play with the annual themes and the minimal word count. This one that I wrote during the summer of 2008 has always been one of my favorite Best of pieces, and I thought to share it with you because it's weather-appropriate, and I think you'll dig it.
The retarded monkeys that took over/ruined the once legendary alt-weekly and literary haven that was the LA Weekly have removed all the illustrations that accompanied the ten-years' worth of articles I wrote for them. And, while I'm sure I have the finely rendered ink version of this logo that I drew in an external hard drive somewhere, hunting for it isn't really the wisest use of my time. Trust me, my chicken-scratchy version was nothing short of adorable.
Addendum: My super awesome assistant, Asha, found the original illustration, which is included here. Yay.
In this solo romp, we explore how selective facts, omission, and “expert authority” are used to manipulate public perception, why following the money changes the story, and how philanthropic funding influences what gets amplified, reframed, or erased.
I also dig into the persistent though unexamined belief in hierarchies of human value, and how they have this horrendous habit of dangerously disconnecting us from our humanity. I delve into the stupidity of social justice quotas, the power of cultivating collaborative coherence, and oodles more.
Occupational therapist (and championship pole dancer!), Kristen Gilbert, stopped by the podcast to discuss quantum biology, light hygiene, and the sacred art of slowing down.
I received a pitch today that perfectly illustrates how people unknowingly talk themselves out of alignment—simply through sloppy languaging.
This is the kind of thing we unpack deeply here:
How words shape power dynamics
How projection creates resistance
How precision opens doors
This video is a teaser for a solo episode coming next week where I go much deeper.
Curious what you notice as you watch 👀

Hi Dani, I seem to remember an interview I think you did on your podcast with a guy who creates/sells private cell phone network services?
I am in the process of establishing my own local network and want to disconnect from the mainstream carriers. Any information or insights you have to share is appreciated. ~ Peace ❤
